The name is a tribute to the Anglo-Saxon king Alfred the Great, a great scholar and patron of the arts. In his preface to his translation of Augustine's Soliloquies, Alfred compares the task of a translator to that of a man collecting timber to build a house, who laments that he cannot take home all the trees, each of which would serve him well.
